Description

A brass star 25cm across, built in two layers: a back rank of broad rays with blunt angled tips, and in front of it a rank of narrower rays folded along the middle so each one carries a bright face and a shadowed one. They radiate from a single point at the centre, and the whole star stands 10cm deep front to back. A twisted brass wire loop rises from the top ray to hang it.

The folding is what the star does. Light reaching it from one side is caught by half of every front ray and missed by the other half, so the face reads as a turning wheel rather than as a flat disc, and it changes as the star swings. At 25cm across and 0.175kg it hangs from a hook in a wall or in a window rather than from a branch.

The star is brass throughout. Every ray is hand cut from brass sheet, the pieces are assembled around a brass pipe at the centre that holds them together, and the wire loop is added last. The finish is left softly aged rather than polished, so the tone varies from ray to ray. Amata also runs as a tree topper, a set of three baubles and a set of two star baubles.
