Description

A wall mirror 81cm wide and 66cm tall, wider than it is high, with the top two corners carried round into a shallow arch and the bottom two left square. The frame is a slim rounded moulding with a fine step cut along each edge, cast in aluminium and finished in a cool silver. The cast surface is pitted and granular the whole way round, and the tone sits darker in the pits than on the face.

At 81cm wide this is a mirror to go above something rather than beside it: a console table, a chest of drawers or a mantelpiece, where the width sits within the piece below it. The arch takes the hard corners off the top, so in a hallway it reads softer than a plain rectangle would. It weighs 13.4kg, which is a good deal for a mirror of this size, so the wall and the fixing both have to be up to it.

The frame is sand cast: molten aluminium is poured into a sand mould, and the mould is what gives the arch its line and the face its unevenness. No two come out of the sand quite alike, so the grain of the surface varies along the frame and from mirror to mirror. The glass is the only other material. Almora is made in a large size in the same silver, and in antique brass in round, arched and oval shapes.
