Description

The small Almora arched mirror is 81cm wide and 66cm high, so it runs wider than it is tall. The frame is cast aluminium, slim, with a rounded moulding on the face and a stepped inner edge, and it carries a shallow arch: the corners curve up and the top runs almost flat between them. The antique brass is uneven along the length, dark and pitted in some stretches and rubbed to a brighter gold where the moulding stands proud.

Wider than it is tall, this is the shape that goes above something rather than beside it: a mantelpiece, a console table, a chest of drawers, a run of hallway pegs. Hung above a fireplace with its lower edge just clear of the shelf, it takes the light from the room and puts it back across the wall. A single keyhole plate is fitted at the top centre of the back, and the mirror weighs 11.88kg.

The frame is cast aluminium and the glass is mirror. Casting leaves a texture in the surface that the antique brass then follows, so the frame is marked and mottled rather than even and no two are alike. The Almora range runs to the same arched mirror in a large and in a full length size, and to round, oval and rectangular wall mirrors in antique brass and antique nickel.
