Description

The large Almora, a circle 88cm across with a frame only a few centimetres wide holding plain flat glass. The frame section is a set of concentric rounded ribs, and at this diameter they read as a thin ring of light around the glass rather than as a border. The antique brass is uneven over the casting, pale where the ribs stand up and browner in the grooves between them, with patches where it has worn lighter still. The glass is unbevelled and reaches almost to the frame.

88cm fills a wall on its own. Above a low wooden sideboard it wants hanging high enough to reflect the opposite wall rather than the top of the sideboard. A hall, a chimney breast, or the wall above a sideboard or a bed all take it at this size. It hangs from a keyhole plate at the top of the back, stands 3cm off the wall, and weighs 10.4kg.

The frame is cast aluminium and the glass is plain mirror. The casting leaves the surface uneven and the brass sits over that, so no two circles are finished alike. Almora makes this round mirror at 62cm as well, along with arched mirrors, an oval, and rectangular wall mirrors, in antique brass and in antique nickel.
