Akra Recycled Glass Vase - Clear

A clear glass vase 20cm tall and 17cm across, shaped like a storage jar: straight sides that turn in at the shoulder to a short neck, finished with a rolled lip that flares out again at the top. The surface is hammered all over, in shallow dimples that break the light into small facets rather than letting it run flat across the glass.

At 20cm it stands on a table, a sideboard or a shelf rather than on the floor, and the 17cm body gives it enough base not to go over when stems lean out of it. The neck is well under the width of the body, so a handful of stems gathers in the middle and stands upright without being arranged. It carries olive branches, which is about the weight of woody material the neck will take.

The glass is recycled and the vase is hand blown into a simple mould. The dimpling comes out slightly differently on every one and the thickness of the glass varies around the body, so the way the light breaks across it belongs to that vase alone. It weighs 1.2kg.

Is the glass recycled?

Yes. The waste glass is collected and washed to remove impurities, then crushed and melted down before the molten glass is hand blown into a mould.

Why is the surface uneven?

It is hammered, and the vase is hand blown into a simple mould, so the dimpling and the thickness of the glass differ from one to the next.

What sort of stems does it take?

The neck is narrow against the 17cm body, so stems gather and keep their position. It will hold olive branches.

How should it be cleaned?

Wipe it regularly with a soft, damp cloth. To clean it, hand wash only using a mild dish soap and do not leave it to soak.
