Description

The Akki is a cushion cover 60cm wide and 40cm high, handwoven from a blend of wool and cotton. The ground is ochre in a flat plain weave, and across it sit two rows of pale oat blocks with rounded tops, offset against each other and crossed by short ochre bars. The blocks are worked in a looser, shaggier yarn, so they stand slightly proud of the ground and read as texture as much as pattern.

The proportions make it a lumbar cushion rather than a square one, so it goes at the small of the back in the corner of a sofa, or across the width of an armchair where a square cover would sit too high. It sits in front of the square size on a sofa, where the ochre holds against a neutral ground without taking over the seat. On a bed it sits in front of the pillows.

The yarn is wool and cotton, woven on traditional Indian handlooms with the interlocking pattern built into the fabric as the weaving goes rather than printed on afterwards. Where the weave shifts, the blocks sit a little differently from one cover to the next. The Akki cushion cover is also made square, at 50 by 50cm.

Larger or more stubborn marks should go to a professional. The covers are tested for colourfastness.
