Description

The Akari is a flat woven runner rug in jute and cotton, 66 by 200cm and 1cm thick. The ground is undyed jute in a close flat weave, so the field carries no colour of its own beyond the tone of the fibre. Towards each end a band of rust coloured Indian pattern is worked into the weave, and beyond that the warp is left loose as a short pale fringe.

At 66cm wide and 200cm long this is a runner for a floor rather than for a table. It suits a hall, the length of a galley kitchen, or the gap between a bed and a wall. At 1cm thick it sits almost flush with the floor.

The runner is jute and cotton, woven on a handloom. Jute is a rain fed crop that needs little fertiliser or pesticide and spins into a strong thread; cotton is softer and more supple, and the two together give a rug that stands up to being walked on without being hard underfoot. The Akari range also holds two rugs of the same weave, at 120 by 180cm and at 150 by 240cm.
