Description

The Abe is a deep armchair 80cm wide and 74.5cm from front to back, built on a pale mango wood frame that is left showing on every outside face. The back panel is wide hessian strips plaited over and under one another in a basket weave. The sides are flat hessian set into the wood like a panel in a door, and the base is hessian too, fixed along the bottom rail with a close line of round-head tacks. The olive linen goes on the inside faces only, over the inner back, the seat platform, the arm rails and a roll across the top of the back. Two loose cushions sit on it, one for the seat and one for the back.

The seat sits 59cm off the floor and runs 60cm wide between the arms. The chair stands 90.6cm tall, low enough to go under a window or in front of a low bookcase without cutting across either, and it carries up to 120kg. At 80cm wide and 74.5cm deep it wants its own patch of floor rather than a place in a row. The woven back is a finished face rather than a lining, so the chair can stand out in a room with its back showing.

The frame is mango wood and the upholstery is linen, with hessian across the back, the sides and the base. The linen is slubby, so the thread shows unevenly across the olive rather than reading flat. The front legs are turned and the back legs are squared and splayed out behind. Abe is made in stone, charcoal and rust as well as this olive, there is a striped linen, and the same chair is made in moss velvet.
