Description
The Abe is a deconstructed armchair: the back and the sides are left open so the mango wood frame and the hemp lining inside it are on show rather than covered over. The front is upholstered in a smooth charcoal linen, with a loose seat cushion, a back cushion and a smaller lumbar cushion resting on top of it. Below the seat runs a band of hemp webbing studded with a close row of tacks, and the whole chair stands on four turned wooden legs.
It is 80cm wide and 74.5cm deep overall, and the seat sits 59cm from the floor, 60cm across and 74cm deep. The pale frame reads against the dark linen, and the open back lets the wall show through it. It takes up to 120kg. A chair with an open back is made to be seen from behind, so it can stand out in a room rather than against a wall.
The upholstery is linen and the frame that shows is mango wood, lined with hemp. Mango is grown first for its fruit and cut for timber only once the trees have stopped bearing, which lets farmers replant and gives them a second income. The Abe is made in six colourways: charcoal, stone, olive and rust in linen, a natural stripe, and moss in velvet.
