Description

The Abari is a hanging planter in two parts, a tapered zinc pot and an iron cage that carries it. The cage is built from vertical rods that run down from a ring at the top, cross a horizontal hoop set at the height of the rim and bolted through it, then close in under the base. The pot drops into that hoop and is held at the rim. A black chain and an oval link hang from a ball fixing bolted through the centre of the top ring. The zinc is mottled grey with pale patina and rust blooming through it, and the iron is finished rust throughout.

It stands 43cm tall and 28cm across, holds 4000ml, and the pot has holes in the base, so it is made to hang where water running out of it does not matter. It is suitable for outdoor use. Hung in a pair from their chains against a plain wall, the rust rods read as strongly as the pot does. The large Abari is 54cm tall and 32cm across and holds 5000ml.

The pot is zinc and the cage is iron. The aged finish is made to weather further with time, so the tone of the zinc and the depth of the rust on the cage both move on from how they arrive. Each one is finished by hand, so the patina falls differently on every pot. The Abari also runs as a round hanging planter, a wall hung planter, a tapered planter and a planter stand, all in the same aged zinc.
