Description
The Knightsbridge 5A unswitched round socket module is a 50 x 50mm modular power outlet designed for euro-module faceplate systems. The module features a round three-pin BS 546 socket rated at 5A on 230V mains, with an earth terminal and IP20 protection against solid objects larger than 12.5mm.
Designed for modular installations where different socket types, switches, data ports and media connections need to be combined on a single faceplate, the module fits standard 50 x 50mm euro-module grids and requires a minimum 25mm back box depth. The unswitched design means the socket is permanently live when wired in, making it suitable for appliances that need continuous power or where the on/off control is on the appliance itself rather than the wall.
The matt black ABS construction matches other modules in the Knightsbridge Grid range, allowing consistent finish across mixed-function faceplates. The 5A rating handles lighting circuits, small appliances, and devices drawing up to 1,150W, making it suitable for table lamps, phone chargers, radios, and similar low-draw equipment rather than high-power appliances like kettles or heaters.

Frequently Asked
What is a BS 546 socket?
BS 546 is the British Standard for round-pin plugs and sockets, commonly used for lighting circuits and low-draw appliances. This 5A version has three round pins in a triangular configuration and includes an earth connection. It differs from the more common BS 1363 13A rectangular-pin sockets used for standard UK mains outlets.
Can this be used with standard UK plugs?
No. This socket accepts only BS 546 round-pin plugs. Standard UK appliances with rectangular BS 1363 plugs cannot be used with this socket without an adapter. It is typically specified for lighting circuits or specialist equipment that requires a 5A round-pin outlet.
What faceplate is required?
The module requires a separate euro-module grid faceplate that accepts 50 x 50mm modules. Knightsbridge offers compatible grid plates in various finishes and configurations (single, double, triple, quad) that clip onto a metal frame fixed to the back box.
Is the socket always live?
Yes. The module is unswitched, meaning the socket is permanently live when wired in. If on/off control is needed, use a switched module variant or control power at the consumer unit or via a switched fused spur.
