Description

The Knightsbridge 5A round pin unswitched socket is designed for dedicated lighting circuits and low-current appliances, fitted behind a brushed chrome flat plate with a black insert. The socket accepts a 5A round pin plug conforming to BS 546, the historic British standard still used for lighting circuits where a dedicated switched connection is needed separate from standard 13A ring mains.

Most commonly installed in hospitality, theatre, residential and commercial settings where table lamps, floor lamps or decorative lighting need a dedicated socket that cannot accidentally be used for high-draw appliances. The unswitched design means the socket is always live when the circuit breaker is on, making it suitable for lamps controlled by their own inline switches or dimmers. The 87.5mm square flat plate sits just 2.5mm proud of the wall, giving an ultra-low profile finish that works in both contemporary minimalist interiors and period properties where a discreet fitting is preferred.

The brushed chrome finish provides a cooler metallic tone than brass or gold variants, pairing well with stainless steel, nickel hardware and grey-toned interiors. The black insert behind the chrome faceplate conceals the back of the cover plate and gives a defined edge to the socket aperture. The premium-grade steel construction and built-in gasket provide a secure fit to the back box, and the plate is certified to BS 546 for use on 230V 50Hz circuits up to 5A load (1,150W maximum).

Frequently Asked

What is a 5A round pin socket used for?

5A round pin sockets are designed for lighting circuits and low-current appliances. They accept BS 546 round pin plugs, historically used for table lamps and floor lamps on dedicated lighting circuits separate from the 13A ring main. This prevents high-draw appliances being plugged into lighting circuits not rated for heavy loads.

What back box depth is required?

A 25mm minimum back box depth is needed for safe installation. The flat plate adds just 2.5mm of projection from the wall once fitted, making this one of the lowest-profile socket designs available.

Is the socket switched or unswitched?

Unswitched. The socket is live whenever the circuit breaker is on, making it suitable for lamps with their own inline switches or dimmers. If you need a switched 5A socket, Knightsbridge produces switched variants in the same finish range.

What other finishes are available in the Flat Plate range?

Knightsbridge produces the Flat Plate range in multiple finishes including polished chrome, brushed chrome, polished brass, antique brass, matt black and white. Use the search function or filters to find other variants in stock at Niori.
