Description

The Knightsbridge 20A 1-gang DP switch is a double pole isolator designed for fixed appliances drawing up to 4,600W on 230V mains — typically water heaters, immersion heaters and electric showers. The double pole switching breaks both live and neutral conductors when the switch is off, providing full isolation rather than the single-pole switching used in standard lighting circuits.

Designed for residential and light commercial installation, the switch fits a standard 25mm minimum back box depth and uses a screwless cover plate that clips onto a separate metal sub-frame. This means there are no visible screws or fixings on the wall once installed, giving a cleaner finish than traditional screw-fixed plates. The brushed chrome faceplate provides a low-sheen metallic finish that pairs with both contemporary and traditional interiors.

The premium-grade steel construction and 87.5mm square faceplate match the dimensions of standard UK single-gang faceplates, allowing the switch to sit alongside other Knightsbridge accessories in the same range without misalignment. The rocker mechanism is rated for frequent switching and the built-in gasket improves the fit against the mounting box. Certified to EN 60669-1 and carrying a 25-year warranty, the switch is designed for long-term installation rather than temporary or rental use.

Frequently Asked

What appliances is a 20A switch used for?

20A switches are designed for fixed appliances that draw high current but run on a dedicated circuit — typically water heaters, immersion heaters, electric showers and commercial kitchen equipment. The 20A rating supports loads up to 4,600W on 230V mains. Standard 13A sockets are not suitable for these appliances.

What does double pole (DP) switching mean?

Double pole switching breaks both the live and neutral conductors when the switch is turned off, fully isolating the appliance from the mains supply. This provides greater safety than single-pole switching, which only breaks the live conductor, and is required for certain high-draw appliances under UK wiring regulations.

What back box depth is required?

A 25mm minimum back box depth is needed for safe installation. The screwless cover plate adds approximately 4.3mm of projection from the wall once fitted, giving a low-profile finish.

Is the screwless plate removable for redecorating?

Yes. The cover plate clips onto a separate metal sub-frame fixed to the back box. The cover can be removed for painting around the switch and re-clipped without re-wiring or disturbing the electrical connections.
