Morris & Co.

Morris & Co. draws on one of the most recognisable pattern archives in British design, and the prints have lost none of their density or their draughtsmanship in translation to bedding and bath. We stock the range across duvet covers, fitted sheets, bath mats and towels, in the muted, layered palette the archive is known for.

The archive, and why the patterns still work

The designs Morris & Co. draws on were made for hand-blocked wallpaper and woven textile, which means they were built to repeat at close quarters without the repeat becoming obvious. That is a harder problem than it sounds and it is why the patterns hold up on a duvet cover, where you look at them from thirty centimetres away every night.

The drawing is dense. Acorns, willow boughs, birds and pomegranates fill the ground rather than sitting on it, so the pattern reads as texture from across a room and resolves into detail when you are close. A sparser print does the opposite and looks thin on a large surface.

The palette

The colours are muted and layered rather than bright, drawn from natural dyes: herbal greens, indigo, madder red, ochre and undyed cream. They sit comfortably against wood, brass, painted panelling and stone, which is why the range suits an older house and a plainer modern one equally.

Because the palette is consistent across the archive, pieces from different designs work together. A bird and pomegranate sheet under an acorn duvet cover is a deliberate look rather than a clash, which is not true of most patterned bedding.

What we stock

Bedding runs to duvet cover sets and fitted sheets, in percale cotton with a garment-washed finish. Bath covers mats and towels in pure cotton. Cushions carry the same prints in a smaller format, which is the easiest way to bring the pattern into a room that is not a bedroom.

Sizes run through the standard UK range. Where a piece is a set, the product page states what comes in the pack rather than leaving it to convention.

Care

Many pieces in the range are pure cotton and wash at 40 degrees. Wash darker prints separately for the first few cycles, and keep bleach away from anything dyed, including the optical brighteners in some detergents, which grey a natural-dye palette faster than almost anything else.

Tumble dry on a low heat where the product page allows it. Percale rewards being brought in slightly damp and pressed warm if you want the crisp finish it is capable of.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these the original archive designs?

The prints are drawn from the Morris & Co. archive and adapted to modern bedding and bath sizes. The drawing and the palette follow the originals; the cloth and the construction are contemporary.

What is the range made from?

Many pieces are pure cotton. Bedding is largely percale with a garment-washed finish; bath mats and towels are cotton throughout. Each product page states its own composition.

Do the different designs work together?

Yes. The palette is consistent across the archive, so a sheet in one design under a duvet cover in another reads as deliberate rather than as a clash.

What temperature should I wash them at?

Forty degrees. Wash darker prints separately for the first few cycles and keep bleach away, including detergents with optical brighteners, which grey a natural-dye palette quickly.

Do duvet sets include pillowcases?

A single normally includes one and larger sizes include two. Each product page states its own contents.

Is the pattern printed or woven?

It varies by piece. Where a design is woven rather than printed, the product page says so. A woven pattern keeps its definition through years of washing where a print softens gradually.
