Description
The Seaweed cushion carries a printed floral design across a deep indigo velvet face, with sinuous stems, slender leaves and open coral-red flowers scattered over a densely dotted ground. It is a printed velvet cushion measuring 40 x 60cm, a generous rectangular bolster shape rather than a square, which makes it the piece you reach for when you want something to sit lengthways along a sofa back or across the head of a bed. The pattern is an authentic reproduction from a 1901 document in the Morris & Co. archive, originally drawn by J.H. Dearle, whose free-flowing lines were drawn from the movement of underwater plants.
A rectangular cushion of this size earns its place at the front of a grouping, where its length balances a pair of smaller square cushions set behind it. The indigo ground reads as a quiet, deep base, so the coral and sage tones in the print do the talking against it. It suits a living room sofa, a reading chair or a bed, and sits happily alongside plainer cushions in navy, cream or a warm terracotta that picks up the flowers. The busy, all-over pattern means it works as the one decorated piece in an otherwise calm arrangement.
The face is printed onto velvet, which gives the colours depth and a soft, light-catching pile. It is finished with a plain reverse in the same indigo and a piped edge that frames the front, with a zip closure so the cover can be taken off. Velvet is made from polyester here, so the pile keeps its look with regular gentle care. As part of our wider Seaweed range drawn from the Morris archive, it pairs naturally with matching curtains in the same print for a room that hangs together.
