Description

The Trident is a round porthole bulkhead light with a solid brass body in a satin nickel finish. Its clear ribbed glass sits behind a three-arm guard, the arms meeting at a domed boss in the centre, while the ribs in the glass radiate outwards like the spokes of a wheel. It is 21cm in diameter and weighs 1.5KG. The IP64 rating is the figure that matters outdoors: it means the light is dust-tight and protected from splashing water, so it can live on an outside wall through British weather all year round.

We would put the Trident beside a front door, in a porch, along a garden wall or on the side of a boathouse: the maker designs its bulkheads for outdoor walls that call for a nautical or industrial look. The maker says the maritime influence shows in the range's materials, designs and names, and describes the Trident as recalling the designs of an older manufacturing era. The three fixing lugs around the rim give it the air of a ship's light, and the satin nickel has a soft, cool sheen. The maker also says the guard is much thinner than the grille on its standard porthole, letting the light spread further, and suggests it will draw comments from motoring enthusiasts.

Solid brass does not rust, which makes it a sound choice for a light that stays out in all weathers. The cable comes in through a gland at either the end or the rear, so you can choose the entry that suits the wall, and a brass blank is included to replace the gland. The light takes one E27 (ES) lamp of up to 18W, and the lamp is not included. As with any mains light, it should be installed by a qualified electrician. Choose your bulb when you order, and the Trident is ready for its first evening.
