Description

The Siam 80 is a wide ceiling light with a cone shade of pleated white translucent ribbon, its folds fanning out from a round diffuser at the centre to a broad rim. It measures 80cm across and 28cm tall, so it covers a good stretch of ceiling rather than sitting there as a small fitting. The ribbon lets light pass through, so the whole shade glows softly while the diffuser underneath sends light down into the room. The shade hangs on a short white stem of 9.5cm beneath a white canopy 12cm across, keeping it close to the ceiling where a hanging pendant would feel low.

Its size suits larger rooms: a living room, a dining room, an open-plan space, a generous landing or a stairwell, where one broad fitting fills the ceiling well. In a bedroom it gives a soft overall light without the glare of a bare bulb. It is rated IP20, so it is for dry rooms only, and it is made for indoor use. The pleated white ribbon and white structure sit quietly in pale, neutral schemes, and they soften rooms with plenty of hard surfaces such as stone, timber and glass.

The structure is iron and stainless steel, finished in white, and carries the ribbon shade in its cone. It takes three E27 bulbs of up to 9W each, which are sold separately; they are the light source, so you will need all three before it lights. It runs on 230V mains and is wired in by a qualified electrician, and as a Class I fitting it is earthed. Choose three bulbs of the same colour temperature and brightness for an even glow across the ribbon, and keep each one within the 9W limit.
