Description
The Quinn Guard is an outdoor wall lantern in solid brass with an antique brass finish, a deep, darkened tone rather than a polished shine. A goose-neck arm curves out from a round wall plate and down into a wide-brimmed hood, and beneath it a clear ribbed glass shade sits inside a sturdy cage. The lantern is 17cm wide and 30cm tall and stands 22cm from the wall, so it has real presence without crowding a doorway. It is rated IP64, which means it is dust-tight and protected from splashing water: it lives outdoors in British weather all year round, wind-driven rain included.
The maker says these lanterns are often bought in pairs, one either side of a doorway or entrance, and that is how we would hang them too. With its guard around the glass, it suits a front door, a porch, a back door, a garden wall or a boathouse, anywhere a light might take the odd knock. The look is maritime with an industrial edge: the maker describes the lanterns as designed for outdoor spots where an industrial or nautical effect is wanted, and says the maritime influence shows in the range's materials, designs and names.
The body is solid brass, and solid brass darkens and mellows outdoors, so the lantern only gains character as the seasons pass. The maker describes the finish as aged and original-looking. The cable enters at the rear, so it can come straight out of the wall behind the plate with nothing on show. The lantern takes one E27 (ES) lamp, the common large screw cap, so a replacement is never hard to find. At 2.6KG it is a substantial lantern, and like any mains light it is installed by a qualified electrician. Our practical tip: a warm white lamp suits the antique brass and brings out the ribbing in the glass.
