Description
The Palaemon North is an oval eyelid bulkhead light in solid brass with an antique brass finish, a dark, warm, mottled tone that looks as though it has already seen a few winters. A curved brass hood shades the top of the clear ribbed glass like a half-closed eyelid, two brass bars run across the glass as a guard, and a fixing lug sits at each corner. It is 21cm long, 12.5cm wide and 12cm deep, and weighs 2.4KG. The IP64 rating settles the outdoor question: it is dust-tight and protected from splashing water, so this bulkhead lives outside through every season of British weather.
It belongs beside a front door, in a porch, on a garden wall or on the side of a boathouse, and it suits an industrial look as readily as a coastal one. Look at the top of the hood and you will see slits cut through the brass. The maker describes them as north facing, decorative uplight slits, so a little light escapes upward onto the wall while the main glow comes through the ribbed glass. The maker says the maritime influence shows in the materials, the designs and even the names of the range, and this light wears it openly: a ship's bulkhead brought ashore.
The maker says the solid brass body has an aged, original-looking finish, and solid brass darkens and mellows outdoors, so expect the colour to deepen gently with the years. The cable enters through a gland at the end or at the rear of the light, and a brass blank is included to replace the gland. It takes one E27 (ES) lamp at 18W maximum, and the lamp is not included. As a mains light, it is installed by a qualified electrician. Buy a lamp at the same time, within that 18W limit, and it is ready to switch on once fitted.

Frequently Asked
Can the Palaemon North bulkhead be used outdoors?
Yes. It is rated IP64, which means it is dust-tight and protected from splashing water, so it suits an exterior wall in British weather.
Can this brass bulkhead go in a bathroom?
Its IP64 rating means it can be considered for a bathroom, and a qualified electrician will confirm the right zone.
What lamp does it take?
It takes one E27 (ES) lamp with an 18W maximum. The lamp is not included, so you will need to buy one separately.
How big is the bulkhead?
It is 21cm long, 12.5cm wide and 12cm deep, and it weighs 2.4KG, so it reads as a substantial piece of brass on a wall.
Will the antique brass finish change outdoors?
The maker says the solid brass body has an aged, original-looking finish, and solid brass naturally darkens and mellows outdoors, so expect the colour to deepen gently over time.
What do the slits in the hood do?
The maker describes them as north facing, decorative uplight slits, so a little light escapes upward onto the wall as well as through the ribbed glass.
