Description

The Palaemon is an eyelid bulkhead light: an oval body of solid brass in a satin nickel finish, with a hood over the upper half of the glass that gives the style its name. Beneath the hood sits clear ribbed glass, crossed by two bars that guard it, with a small lug at each corner of the body. It is 21cm long, 13cm wide and 11cm deep. The IP64 rating settles the outdoor question: it is dust-tight and protected from splashing water, so it lives outside in British weather.

It belongs on an outside wall: beside a front door, in a porch, along a garden wall or on a boathouse or outbuilding. The maker describes it as focused and traditional, and well suited to lighting walkways and paths, so a row of them along a side return works well. The look is maritime, which the maker says shows across its range in the materials, designs and names, and the guard bars and corner lugs add an industrial edge. Satin nickel gives it a cool, silvery tone that sits comfortably against white render, grey stone, painted brick or dark timber cladding.

Under the satin nickel finish the body is solid brass, and at 1.4KG it has the reassuring weight of a well made metal light. The cable enters through a gland at the end or at the rear, and a brass blank is included to replace the gland when the rear entry is used. It takes one E27 (ES) lamp, the familiar large screw fitting, and the clear ribbed glass acts as the diffuser. As with any mains light, it should be installed by a qualified electrician. One practical point: the bars across the glass give it some protection, a sensible choice where a bike or a ladder might otherwise knock the glass.

Frequently Asked

Can the Palaemon stay outside all year round?

Yes. It is rated IP64, which means it is dust-tight and protected from splashing water, so it can stay on an outside wall through British weather.

What lamp does it take?

It takes one E27 lamp, also known as ES, the familiar large screw fitting, which sits behind clear ribbed glass that acts as the diffuser.

How big is the Palaemon bulkhead light?

It is 21cm long, 13cm wide and 11cm deep, and it weighs 1.4KG, a compact size for a doorway, a porch or a garden wall.

Is it made of solid brass?

Yes. The body is solid brass with a satin nickel finish, which gives it a cool, silvery tone rather than the warm gold of bare brass.

How does the cable enter the light?

The cable enters through a gland at the end or at the rear, and a brass blank is included to replace the gland when the rear entry is used.

Is it a good choice for lighting a path?

The maker describes it as focused and well suited to lighting walkways and paths, so it works well mounted on a wall that runs alongside a path.
