Description
The Horatio is an oval bulkhead light made from solid brass in a raw brass finish, with a clear ribbed glass diffuser sitting behind a substantial brass cage. The cage bars cross the glass both ways, and four lugs stand out from the body, so it has the purposeful look of lighting from a ship. It measures 25cm long, 16cm wide and 16.5cm high and weighs 1.7KG, which gives it real substance on a wall. The IP64 rating settles where it can go: it is dust-tight and protected from splashing water, so it lives outdoors in British weather.
Put it beside a front door or in a porch, along a garden wall, or on a boathouse or a garden building, anywhere a plain wall light would look too ordinary. The maker describes the Horatio as taking its influence from traditional maritime lighting, and says that influence shows in the materials, designs and even the names of the range. It suits a coastal cottage, a harbourside home or a house with a nautical or industrial streak. With its cage around the glass, it is equally at home by a back door or along a side passage.
Solid brass darkens and mellows outdoors, and the maker says the Horatio's brass ages naturally, developing a patina so its appearance changes gradually over time. The cable enters through a gland at the end or the rear, and a brass blank is included to replace the gland, so you can choose the entry that suits your wall. It takes one E27 (ES) lamp of up to 18W, and the lamp is not included, so order one alongside it. The maker says individual parts can be replaced if needed, which helps keep the light in use rather than discarded. Like any mains light, it should be installed by a qualified electrician.
