Description
The Grand Cabin is a round porthole bulkhead light with a solid brass body in a satin nickel finish, a soft, pale silver that sits comfortably against painted render, stone or brick. A grid cage crosses the clear ribbed glass, whose fine ribs fan out from the centre and soften the light of the bulb behind them. It is 24cm in diameter and 10cm deep, a generous size that holds its own on a broad wall. Rated IP64, it is dust-tight and protected from splashing water, which means it lives outdoors through every season of British weather.
The maker describes it lighting the front of a building or the way along an inn passageway, and it is just as at home beside a front door, in a porch, on a garden wall or on a boathouse. The maker says these bulkheads are designed for outdoor places that call for an industrial or nautical effect, and that the maritime influence shows in the range's materials, designs and names. That makes it a natural choice for a coastal cottage, a harbourside pub or a converted warehouse, wherever a working, shipboard look suits the building. The satin nickel keeps the porthole shape cool and understated, so it sits as happily on a modern home as on an older one.
Three lugs sit around the rim, and at 1.86KG the solid brass body is a substantial piece of metal. The cable enters through a gland at either the end or the rear, and a brass blank is included to close whichever opening stays unused, so one light covers both arrangements. It takes a single E27 (ES) lamp of up to 18W, and the lamp is not included, so have one ready before fitting day. As with any mains light, we recommend that a qualified electrician installs it.
