Description

The East is a square recessed downlight with a plaster finish, made to sit into the ceiling so that only a neat square face shows. That face is 7.8cm across on each side, with a square opening 6cm by 6cm through which the light shines, and the plain white plaster gives it a quiet, architectural look. It takes one GU10 bulb, up to 50W, which is sold separately and gives the light; because the bulb is your choice, you can pick the brightness and colour of light that suits the room.

Our East downlight suits a kitchen, where a row of small square lights over a worktop or island gives clear light from the ceiling without a pendant hanging in the way. Set out in a grid across a larger ceiling, they look calm and ordered, and the small square opening keeps the look crisp and understated. It is rated IP20, so it is for dry rooms only, kept well away from anywhere it could be splashed, and it is for indoor use. Because the bulb sits inside the square body rather than below the ceiling, the light comes from a clean square recess.

Each East downlight runs on 230V mains and is for a qualified electrician to install. It is a Class II fitting. The plaster finish is plain and smooth, with crisp square edges and a white, matt surface that sits quietly against a painted ceiling. When planning, it helps to know the numbers: it needs a ceiling cut-out of 8.8cm by 8.8cm and a recess depth of 12cm to 14.5cm, so check the space above your ceiling before deciding where each one goes. With the space confirmed, a set of them will give a kitchen neat, practical overhead light. The reflector lamp in our photographs is not included.
