Description
The Bertha is a round recessed ground light in an antique brass finish, made to be set into the ground and throw its light upwards. It is brass with a plastic base, and its top face is a round brass plate held by four screws, framing a clear lens over the lamp. It measures 10cm across and 13.3cm deep, so it takes up little ground and sits almost unseen by day. The IP67 rating is the figure that matters most for a ground light: it is dust-tight and can take standing water for a short time, so it copes with puddles after a downpour and with wet winter soil.
As an up-light it is at its best set into a path, a patio or a planted border, washing light up a garden wall, a tree trunk, a gatepost or the front of a house. A pair either side of a front door, or a run along a path, gives the outside of a home a quiet shape after dark. The antique brass is a warm, aged colour rather than a bright polish, and it suits a cottage garden, a period house or a coastal home equally well. The maker says the maritime influence shows in the range's materials, designs and names, and the round, screwed top of the Bertha has something of a ship's porthole about it.
The maker describes the brass body as having an aged, original-looking finish, and brass itself darkens and mellows outdoors, so the colour deepens with the seasons rather than staying showroom bright. The cable enters through the base, which keeps the top face clean. It takes one GU10 lamp, a widely available type, and at 0.83KG it is easy to handle. It runs on mains power, so a qualified electrician should install it. Once fitted, brush leaves and soil from the lens now and then so the beam stays clear.

Can this ground light cope with rain and standing water?
Yes. It is rated IP67, which means it is dust-tight and can take standing water for a short time, so it suits being set into a path, patio or border outdoors.
What lamp does the Bertha take?
It takes one GU10 lamp, a widely available type, and a warm white GU10 sits nicely with the antique brass finish.
How big is the Bertha ground light?
It is 10cm across and 13.3cm deep, and it weighs 0.83KG, so it takes up very little room in the ground.
Will the antique brass finish change outdoors?
The maker describes the finish as aged and original-looking, and brass naturally darkens and mellows outdoors, so expect the colour to deepen over time.

Is the Bertha all brass?
It is brass with a plastic base, and the top face is a round brass plate held by four screws around a clear lens.
