Description
The Knightsbridge 10AX 1-gang intermediate switch provides three-point lighting control behind a brushed brass flat plate with a matching metal rocker. The intermediate function sits between two 2-way switches in a lighting circuit, allowing a single light or group of lights to be controlled from three separate locations — typically at the top, middle and bottom of a staircase, or along a long hallway with multiple entry points.
Designed for residential and commercial lighting circuits up to 10AX (2,300W on 230V), the switch fits standard UK back boxes with a minimum 16mm depth. The ultra-low profile plate projects just 2.5mm from the wall once fitted, sitting nearly flush with the plaster. The built-in gasket between the plate and the back box provides additional protection against moisture ingress, extending the service life of the internal mechanism in areas with higher humidity.
The brushed brass finish on the steel plate provides a warm metallic accent that pairs with traditional, classical and warm-toned contemporary interiors. The directional brushed texture catches light differently depending on viewing angle, giving the switch a subtle depth that polished finishes lack. The metal rocker matches the plate finish and provides a tactile click when operated, confirming the switch state without needing to check the light itself.

Frequently Asked
What is an intermediate switch used for?
An intermediate switch sits between two 2-way switches in a lighting circuit, enabling control from three or more locations. Common applications include staircases (top, middle, bottom), long hallways with multiple doors, and large rooms with entries at opposite ends. It cannot be used alone — it always requires two 2-way switches at either end of the circuit.
What back box depth is required?
A minimum 16mm mounting box depth is needed for installation. The 2.5mm projection of the plate means the finished surface sits nearly flush with the wall once fitted.
Can this switch be used with LED bulbs?
Yes. The 10AX rating handles standard resistive loads including LED, CFL, halogen and incandescent bulbs on 230V circuits up to 2,300W total load. For high-inrush loads or very large LED arrays, consult the specification sheet for de-rating guidance.
What other finishes are available in this range?
Knightsbridge produces the flat plate series in multiple finishes including polished chrome, brushed chrome, polished brass, antique brass, matt black and white. Use the search function or filters to find other variants in stock.
