What track does that fixed fittings cannot
A downlight is a decision you make once, with a hole saw. Track is a decision you can revisit: heads slide along the rail, come off, and go back on somewhere else. In a kitchen where an island might move or a worktop might be extended, that matters more than it does in a living room.
It also solves the ceiling you cannot cut into. A concrete slab, a structural beam, or a kitchen where the ceiling was skimmed last month all rule out recessed downlights. Track surface mounts on a single fixing line and needs one feed, so it is frequently the only option that puts light over a worktop without opening the ceiling up again.
Magnetic track against traditional mains track
Most of the range here is Magneto, a low voltage magnetic system: the rail carries the supply, a driver sits remotely, and heads hold on magnetically with no tools. Traditional mains track carries 230V in the rail and uses heads that twist and lock. Magnetic is easier to reconfigure; mains track is simpler to install and needs no separate driver.
Planning the run
Run the track parallel to the worktop rather than across the room, and set it out from the wall by about the depth of the counter, so the heads aim at the front edge rather than the splashback. Lengths here go from 20cm to 60cm and join, so plan the total run before ordering rather than adding to it later.
Plan the switching at the same time. A single run switched as one is simplest, but a kitchen used late benefits from splitting the worktop heads from anything over a table or an island. On magnetic systems that usually means two drivers rather than one, and it is far easier to specify at the start than to retrofit into a populated rail.
Heads, spots and linear sections
The Magneto range mixes adjustable spot heads with linear light bars and pendant drops on the same rail. A practical kitchen run is spots over the worktop and a linear section over the walkway, all switched together. The joints, connectors and live ends are sold separately and are worth listing before you order.
Finish in a kitchen
Black leads the range here, with gold and white behind it. Black track on a white ceiling is a deliberate line, and it reads best when it lines up with something else in the room, the island edge or the run of units. White track on a white ceiling nearly disappears, which is the right choice when the track is a service and not a feature.
Alignment is what separates track that looks intended from track that looks added. Run it parallel to the longest run of units and line the end of the rail up with something real, the edge of an island or the end of a worktop. A rail that stops twenty centimetres short of a natural line draws the eye to the gap.
Dimming and drivers
Magnetic track needs a driver sized to the total load of the heads on the rail, and if you want to dim it, the driver has to be dimmable and matched to the dimmer type. This is the part most often left to the end and it decides whether the system dims smoothly or flickers.
