Description

A pendant light, 68cm wide, in nickel. At 68cm wide it is a little narrower than a standard interior door.

A cool metal finish reflects white rather than yellow, which sharpens a room instead of warming it. Beside a window it disappears; against a dark wall it draws a bright outline. Cast and wrought iron are heavy by nature, and that weight is doing a job: it keeps the piece where it is put rather than shifting every time something brushes past. Iron also holds a hand-worked line that a machine-pressed metal cannot. It comes with its shade, so there is no second purchase to make it usable.

E14 lampholders, 4 of them up to 6-9W LED, and no bulb in the box. Because it is E14, bulbs are stocked everywhere and you are never tied to one supplier. It is dimmable, so the level is set at the wall rather than fixed at the bulb. The cable is clear. It hangs from 82cm, so it clears a table without cutting the sightline. A Candle shaped bulb, which is the word to look for on the box.

A shade does two jobs at once and they pull against each other: it hides the bulb from your eye, and it decides how much light escapes sideways rather than up and down. A dense fabric does the first well and the second hardly at all. A fabric shade fades from the inside out rather than the outside in, because the bulb is closer than the window. A lining slows that considerably, which is most of what a lining is for.
