Description

The Zairya cover is 50cm square, woven from jute and cotton into a heavy ribbed face: thick slubs of natural jute laid in close vertical columns and held by a fine cream cotton warp, so the surface runs in ridges and the colour shifts between straw, gold and cream along them. Across the middle runs a band of soft green, two rows of it, with a narrow indigo chevron stripe down the centre. The edges are plain seams with no fringe or border.

The jute gives the cover more body than a cotton one, so it holds its shape upright at the back of a sofa rather than slumping into the seat. The green band is the only colour in the face, so it reads as a single line drawn across a natural ground rather than as a pattern. Against a pale linen sofa the jute reads much warmer in tone.

The cover is jute and cotton. The jute is undyed, which is where the straw and gold tones come from, and it is coarse enough to feel under the hand. It is woven on a traditional loom. The Zairya range runs to the same cover in a wider size and in a natural and rust colourway, and to a rug, an armchair and a tall pouf in the same jute and cotton.
