Description

A round terracotta planter 50cm across and 36cm high, with a deep bellied body that draws in to a straight collar at the rim. A band of pattern is etched into the upper third by hand, in rows of chevrons, diamonds and fine parallel lines cut shallow into the clay. The surface is chalky and matt, in a pale sandy terracotta rather than a deep orange.

At 50cm across it takes an olive or a citrus tree rather than bedding, and the base is drilled for drainage. It is frost proof and can stay outside the year round. It stands on decking and holds a broad leafed plant. It weighs 8kg empty, and once it is filled and planted it is one to site and leave rather than to move round a terrace.

The planter is ceramic, built by hand by coiling: rolls of clay are layered one on another and then smoothed into shape. The etched pattern is cut afterwards, also by hand, so the spacing and the depth of the lines vary round the pot and from one planter to the next. The same planter is made in grey.
