Description

A rectangular wall mirror in a cast frame, 100cm wide by 75cm high and 3cm deep. The frame is a broad moulding that steps in from a rounded outer edge to the glass, and the casting is left uneven, so the lines waver and the surface carries small dips and ridges rather than running true. It is finished in aged antique brass, darker in the hollows and worn back to a paler gold along the raised edges.

At 100 x 75cm this is a large mirror for above a sideboard, a console or a fireplace, and hung landscape it reaches most of the width of a wide sideboard. Two keyhole fittings are set into the top rail and two more into one side, so the same mirror hangs either landscape or portrait, and hung portrait it stands 100cm high on a 75cm width beside a door or along a hallway. At 12.15kg the scale and the weight mean it needs fastening securely to the wall.

The frame is sandcast aluminium. Molten metal is poured into a mould of packed sand and the casting is broken free once it has cooled, which is what leaves the surface uneven and means no two frames come out identical. The Yamuna is also made in a smaller size, 60cm wide by 43cm high.
