Description
This wood effect stag head ornament stands proud on a turned pedestal base, with three little birds perched among its antlers and a sprig of pine and red berries tucked in at its neck. It is made from polystone resin and painted to look like weathered wood, in a whitewashed brown that picks out every strand of the moulded fur, the veined ears and the branching tines. Each ring of the base is edged with flecks of gold. It measures 34cm tall, 24cm wide and 12cm deep, so it holds its own on a mantelpiece without crowding it.
We think it looks its best at Christmas, set on a mantelpiece, a sideboard, a hallway console table or a bookshelf, where its woodland character sits happily beside pine cones, lanterns and greenery. At 12cm deep it suits a narrower shelf or a windowsill too, and because it stands on its own base it needs no wall, hook or fixing. Its soft, natural colouring works with a rustic, Scandinavian or country scheme as easily as a traditional red and gold one, and it makes a thoughtful Christmas present for anyone who decorates with a woodland theme.
The wood effect is a painted finish over the resin, with the fur, ears and antlers moulded in fine relief and the gold worn back softly on the base for an aged look. To keep it looking its best, dust it now and then with a soft dry cloth or a small soft brush, taking care around the tips of the antlers, the birds and the berry sprig, and keep water and cleaning sprays away from the painted finish. When Christmas is over, wrap the antlers in tissue before you pack it away, and next December try it on a bed of pine garland with a string of fairy lights at its feet.
