Description

A canvas wall art, 100cm tall, in white. At 100cm wide it is wider than a standard interior door. Wall art is the one purchase judged entirely on where it goes. Hang the centre at eye level rather than centring it on the wall, and give a single piece more empty wall around it than instinct suggests.

Cool tones settle beside grey, blue and black without any effort. Against a warm timber they need something to mediate, or the two simply sit next to each other. Pine is a softwood, so it marks more readily than oak or beech — and takes a paint or a wash far better, because the grain drinks it in. Marks in pine read as age rather than damage. Expanded polystyrene is used where a form needs to be large and weigh almost nothing. It gives the shape without the mass, which is what allows an oversized piece to hang or stand on a light fixing. Canvas is a plain, tightly woven cloth stiff enough to hold a shape without a frame. That structure is why a canvas basket stands up rather than slumping.

It hangs on a circle hook. A circle plate drops over a screw head or a hook and sits flat to the wall. At this weight a plug and screw is enough, and there is nothing protruding to hold the piece away from the plaster.

Measure the wall, then take two thirds of its width as the upper limit for a single piece. Above a sofa or a console, aim for roughly the width of the furniture beneath it.
