Description

Void S is a 50cm by 70cm wall mirror built from two overlapping panels where only part of the glass is silvered. The outer panel reads as pale glass and the inner one as mirror, so the wall shows through where they cross and the piece has depth without having thickness.

It is the smallest Void and it works as one of a pair or a group rather than alone on a large wall. The effect depends entirely on what is behind it: on a white wall the unsilvered panel almost vanishes and you see a floating rectangle of mirror, while on a colour the overlap becomes the most visible part of the piece. That makes the wall a component rather than a backdrop, so it is worth choosing the spot before the fixing. It is rated bathroom proof and hangs either way up.

The panel is partly silvered glass, frameless, 3cm deep and 4kg, which makes it the easiest mirror in this group to hang; two screws, washers and plugs are supplied and there is nothing to assemble. Clean it with cleaner sprayed onto a cloth. Because a good part of the glass is deliberately not mirrored, it returns less light than a plain mirror the same size, and that is the trade for the effect rather than a fault. Larger Voids run to 180cm, and the hall size at 175cm is already on the site. It also stands 3cm off the wall, and that gap is part of the effect: light gets behind the unsilvered panel and lifts it away from the plaster instead of letting it sit flat.
