Vivan Grooved Mango Wood Coffee Table - Natural

The Vivan coffee table is a round mango wood top 75cm across, carried on one turned pedestal. The pedestal drops from a narrow waist under the top, swells out into a broad rounded belly and tucks back in again at the floor, and it is cut all over in fine vertical grooves that follow the curve. The same grooving runs round the edge of the top, while the upper face is left plain so the grain reads across it unbroken.

The table stands 45cm high and 75cm across. Because the weight comes down through the middle rather than at four corners, there are no legs to catch a foot on and nothing at the corners to work a rug around, so chairs and a sofa can be pushed in close from any side. That makes it a table for the middle of a seating group rather than one to set against a wall, and the 75cm top gives room for a tray, a book and a glass at once.

The wood is mango throughout and every table is carved by hand, so the depth and the spacing of the grooving vary from one to the next and the grain runs differently through every top. The surface is left in its own tone rather than stained, so it will shift in colour as it ages. The same table is also made in charcoal, and the Vivan range holds a smaller version of it at 55cm across.

Does it have legs?

No. It stands on a single turned pedestal, so it can be approached from any side.

Where is the grooving?

Over the whole pedestal and round the edge of the top. The upper face of the top is left plain.

Will it mark?

The finish can mark where liquid stands on it. Blot any spillage straight away with a dry cloth, and keep chemical cleaners off the wood.

How do I look after it?

Rub an edible oil, olive or walnut, into the surface with a cloth to feed and protect the wood. Oiling will darken the tone, and the colour shifts over time in any case.
