Description

The Visala is a square wall mirror that swivels. The frame is cast aluminium, and the aluminium takes its textured surface from the sand mould it is poured into. It hangs between two round wall plates, one above the frame and one below, each with a short turned stem running into the frame, and the mirror tilts between them. The fitting is 109cm tall overall and 80cm across, and it stands 20cm out from the wall.

It is made for a bedroom or a hallway. Because it fixes at two points, one above the frame and one below, it needs a clear run of wall 109cm tall rather than a single hook, and the 20cm it stands out is worth checking in a narrow hallway. The angle adjusts by hand on the two pivots, so it can be set for someone standing at it and changed again later.

The frame is cast aluminium and the glass is mirrored. Each one is sand cast: sand is shaped and moulded by hand to form the cavity, molten aluminium is poured in and left to cool, and the piece is then finished by hand and assembled with brass toned fittings. The frame is finished by hand, so the texture varies from piece to piece. Almost every material the method uses can be recycled, so very little is thrown away. The mirror weighs 13kg. The Visala range also holds a full length version of the same swivel mirror.
