Description

A lampshade, 50cm wide, in black. The shade is the part of a light that changes the room, and it is also the part that is easiest to get wrong: too small and the fitting shows, too large and it dominates. The bottom diameter is the figure to hold against the space, not the height. At 50cm wide it is a little narrower than a standard interior door.

A dark finish reads as a shape rather than a surface, so the outline does the work and the detail recedes. Against a pale wall that is graphic; against a dark one the piece almost disappears. Cotton breathes and softens with use, and it takes dye in a way that reads warmer than a synthetic of the same colour. It creases, which is either the charm or the objection depending on the room. It is lined in taupe, cotton: an unlined shade throws the outline of the bulb onto the wall, a lined one turns it into an even wash. The shade tapers from 50cm at the bottom to 44cm at the top. A narrow top pushes light down into a pool; a wide one lets it wash the ceiling as well.
