Description
The VFR is a 3-hour emergency conversion kit designed specifically for Knightsbridge 7W and 8W fire-rated downlights, converting standard LED downlights into maintained or non-maintained emergency fittings. The kit includes a rechargeable Ni-Cd battery pack, an LED emergency driver/inverter, and a remote LED charge indicator with a plug-and-play connector system that requires no hard-wiring between components.
Intended for commercial retrofit projects where Building Regulations or fire safety compliance requires emergency lighting without replacing existing downlight fittings, the VFR sits above the ceiling void within the downlight's installation space. The 178mm × 50mm × 28mm polycarbonate housing fits through standard downlight cut-outs, allowing installation or maintenance without damaging ceiling finishes. The kit operates on 230V 50Hz mains, automatically switching to battery power on mains failure and providing 3 hours of emergency illumination.
The kit supports three modes: maintained (lamp on continuously, switching to battery on mains loss), non-maintained (lamp off under normal conditions, battery-powered on mains failure), and switched (lamp controlled by a switch, switching to battery on mains loss). The remote LED indicator mounts outside the ceiling void, showing charge status and mains/battery operation without needing to access the kit above the ceiling. The polycarbonate construction carries an IP20 rating and the entire kit is Class II double-insulated.
Knightsbridge backs the VFR with a 3-year warranty on the inverter and housing, excluding the battery pack which has a typical service life of 3-4 years depending on charge/discharge cycles. The kit is compatible with dimmable downlights when operating on mains power, though dimming is disabled when running on battery.

Frequently Asked
Which Knightsbridge downlights is this kit compatible with?
The VFR is designed for Knightsbridge 7W and 8W fire-rated downlights. It is not compatible with non-fire-rated models or downlights from other manufacturers. Check the downlight model number against Knightsbridge compatibility lists before ordering.
What is the difference between maintained and non-maintained emergency lighting?
Maintained emergency lighting stays on continuously under normal conditions and switches to battery power during a mains failure. Non-maintained emergency lighting only operates when mains power is lost, staying off under normal conditions. The VFR supports both modes plus a switched mode where the lamp is controlled by a wall switch but switches to battery on power loss.
How long does the battery last before replacement?
The Ni-Cd battery pack typically requires replacement every 3-4 years depending on the number of charge/discharge cycles and operating environment. The 3-year warranty covers the inverter and housing but excludes the battery pack itself.
Does the kit work with dimmable downlights?
Yes, the VFR is compatible with dimmable downlights when operating on mains power. Dimming functionality is disabled when the unit switches to battery power during a mains failure.
