Description

The Velbessa is an outdoor wall light with a built-in motion sensor, made from stainless steel with three white plastic panels set into a gently curved front plate. Slim steel bars divide the panels, and the sensor sits in a small round housing just beneath them. It is 26cm high and 23.5cm long, and it stands only 9cm out from the wall, so it sits close and tidy beside a door. It takes one E27 bulb of up to 60W, which is not included, so you choose the brightness and colour of light yourself. With an IP44 rating it is protected from splashing water, so it lives outdoors on a house wall or a garden wall.

We would put it beside a front or back door, along a side path, next to a garage or on a garden wall facing the patio. The motion sensor switches the light on when someone approaches, so there is no fumbling for keys in the dark, and the wall stays dark whenever the path is empty. It suits anyone who wants a welcome at the door without leaving a light burning all evening. The curved front and clean banded lines look at home on modern render and on traditional brick, and stainless steel sits comfortably beside grey, black or white window frames.

The body is stainless steel and the shade is white plastic, which spreads the bulb's glow into three soft, even bands rather than a harsh glare. Stainless steel resists rust, which counts for a great deal on an exterior wall. It runs on mains power at 220-240V, 50/60Hz, so it is wired in and should be installed by a qualified electrician; the installation instructions come as a download, and it weighs 0.57KG packed. One practical note: keep the sensor clear of climbing plants and trailing branches, so it has an open view of whoever approaches.
