Description

A wide serving bowl in earthenware, 28cm across and 9.5cm high. The inside is turned in a shallow spiral of close ridges running from the centre out towards the rim, and the glaze sits thin over the ridges and gathers darker in the grooves between them. The grey is near white at the middle of the well and deepens outward into a speckled, browner grey, with the rim edge darker again than the face of the bowl.

At 28cm across and 9.5cm high it is wide rather than deep, and the sides flare from a small foot, so what is in it shows from across a table. It takes a dressed salad. It is food safe.

The bowl is earthenware, poured into a mould from local Portuguese clay and finished by hand. The reactive glaze is put on in layers and moves as it fires, so the depth of the grey, the speckling and the way the tone breaks over the ridges differ from one bowl to the next. The Valinha range runs to dinner plates, side plates, a cereal bowl, a footed bowl, a round platter, two jugs and a twelve piece dinnerware set in the same grey.
