Description

This is a frosted acrylic disc, 30cm across, opal white over its whole face with a polished chrome centre detail at the middle. The acrylic is frosted rather than clear, so light passes through as a soft, even glow instead of showing the lamp behind it. The disc itself is very slim and barely weighs anything in the hand, and the small chrome button at its centre breaks up the plain white face and picks up any other bright metal in the room. We keep it as a straight replacement for a diffuser that has cracked, gone brittle or yellowed with age.

It is a part rather than a light in its own right, so it carries no lamp and no wiring; the lamp is whatever the host fitting already takes. Circular ceiling fittings in kitchens, hallways, landings and bedrooms are where these usually end up, and a wide, shallow diffuser like this one is what keeps the light in those rooms flat and free of glare. We reach for it when a customer has a perfectly good fitting spoiled by a tired diffuser, and it is a sensible thing to keep in a cupboard in a rented flat or a house full of matching ceiling lights.

Acrylic keeps the piece light and forgiving, and the frosting is through the sheet rather than a coating that can wear off the surface. To clean it, wipe with a soft cloth wrung out in warm water with a little washing up liquid, then dry it off; solvents, alcohol wipes and scouring creams will haze acrylic, so keep them well away. The same disc is made in satin nickel, antique brass and black centre details, plus a plain version with no centre detail at all, and in larger diameters. It carries a one year warranty.

It measures 300mm in diameter and the disc itself is only about 2mm thick, so it sits neatly in place of a standard round diffuser of the same size.

Does it come with a lamp or any electrical parts?

No. It is a non-electrical accessory, so there is no lampholder, wiring or lamp with it. Whatever lamp your existing fitting uses stays as it is.

Will it fit my ceiling light?

It suits round fittings designed for a 300mm diffuser. Measure the diameter of your old diffuser before ordering, and check the larger 400mm and 500mm versions if yours is wider.

How should I clean it?

Use a soft cloth with warm water and a drop of washing up liquid, then dry it. Avoid solvents, alcohol-based cleaners and abrasive creams, as these will cloud acrylic permanently.
