Description

The Tortoreto is a slim pendant light: a single black aluminium tube, 6cm in diameter and 40cm in overall height, hung from a fine cord beneath a small round black ceiling canopy. It takes one GU10 bulb, which is not included, so you choose the brightness and colour of white yourself. The light falls downwards from the base of the tube, giving a focused pool rather than a wide wash. It is rated IP20, which settles where it belongs: indoors, in a dry room. Keep it away from bathrooms, damp spaces and the outdoors.

Because the tube is so narrow, it suits places where a wider shade would crowd the space: over a dining table, beside a reading chair or above a desk in a study. Hung as a row of two or three, the tubes read as clean vertical lines and keep sightlines open across a long table or a breakfast bar. The black finish gives crisp contrast against pale walls and sits quietly in darker schemes where you want the light itself to do the talking. Its focused downward light makes it a good choice wherever you want brightness on a table or a desk rather than across the whole room.

The body is aluminium, a light metal that holds its shape well, and the whole pendant weighs 0.91KG. There is no switch on the light itself; it is switched at the wall, like most ceiling lights. As a wired-in mains fitting, it is installed by a qualified electrician, and the installation instructions come as a download. To keep it looking its best, dust the tube and canopy now and then with a soft, dry cloth. When the time comes to change the bulb, simply fit a new GU10 of your choice, trying a warmer or cooler white until the room feels right.
