Description

The Thimba is two open drums of woven jute rope, one above the other: a wide upper drum 60cm across and a narrower one hanging below and inside it, so the lower rim sits back from the upper one. The rope is worked in a coarse diagonal basket weave with gaps left between the passes, loose enough to see the bulb through. Three jute rope slings run from a brass ring at the top down to the rim of the upper drum, and the flex comes down the middle in rust coloured fabric. It is 49cm deep overall.

Two drums instead of one means the light leaves in two bands. Through the upper drum it goes out sideways at the height of the fitting; through the lower one it goes down and out over a smaller circle. The fitting itself is lit as well as the room below it. At 60cm across and 3.65kg it wants a dining table, a sitting room or a bedroom with the space to carry it rather than a landing. It takes one E27 bulb up to 40W, it is dimmable, and it is rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms.

The rope is jute over an iron frame and the slings are the same rope. It is woven by hand, so the tension varies across the drums and the tone shifts where one length of rope meets the next. Bulbs are not included.
