Description

Tempo is a square wall mirror 90cm across, made of two identical semicircular mirrored areas set against each other so the clear glass between them narrows to a waist. The result reads as an hourglass. At first look the black outline appears to be a slim metal frame holding the mirrored sections; on closer inspection it is printed onto the glass, and the areas between are transparent. The design is by Esther Everaert.

The square format suits a wall where a round mirror would look adrift: over a console, in a cloakroom, on a chimney breast, or in a bathroom where it is rated to go. It hangs in two directions, and because the two halves are identical, turning it through ninety degrees rotates the hourglass to lie on its side. The transparent areas mean the wall colour reads through the waist, so a considered wall colour is part of the piece rather than a background to it. At 11kg and 2.5cm deep it is a one person lift and sits close to the wall.

The mirror is partly transparent mirrored and printed glass, frameless despite appearances. Two screws, washers and plugs are supplied and nothing needs assembling. Clean it with cleaner sprayed onto a soft cloth, wiping along the printed edge rather than across it so the line between mirrored and clear stays sharp. The two semicircles are identical rather than mirrored copies, which is why the waist between them stays an even width however the piece is turned. Seven year warranty, made in Belgium.
