Description

A low armchair built on an acacia frame, with both the seat and the back woven from cotton rope. The rope is worked in a flat plait that runs across each panel in wide bands, and the back is raked well away from the seat rather than standing upright. The arms are shaped timbers that run forward from the top of the back frame and come down onto short uprights above the seat rail, and the front legs angle out as they drop.

The seat is 35.5cm off the floor and the whole chair is only 73cm tall, so it sits below the back of most sofas and does not block the view across a room. It is 69cm wide by 73cm deep, and the seat itself is 61cm across by 53.25cm deep, which leaves room to sit sideways in it with both legs up. It suits a low side table within reach of the arm.

The frame is acacia and the weave is cotton rope. Acacia is a hard wearing timber and it is left in its own colour here, a warm mid brown that deepens along the grain. The rope is undyed and woven by hand, so the run of the plait and the tension across each panel differ from chair to chair. The tone of the wood also shifts over time, so the frame will not stay exactly the shade it arrives in.
