Description

A reclaimed iron kadai on a three legged iron stand, with a grill that sits over the bowl. The bowl is an old cooking vessel of the kind used over fires in India, deep and round, with two heavy ring handles riveted at the rim; the iron is pitted and darkened and carries the marks of the work it did before. The stand is plain round bar, three legs braced at the centre and standing on small discs. It reaches 55cm to the rim of the bowl.

This is the smaller of the two sizes and it burns wood or charcoal, so it is a fire bowl with the grill off and something to cook over with the grill on. At 18.5kg one person can shift it between a patio and a lawn, and the discs under the legs mean it sits on gravel as readily as on paving.

Bowl, stand and grill are all iron. Every bowl is reclaimed, so no two are the same shape or carry the same depth of weathering, and the surface runs from near black through to orange where it has taken the worst of the weather. The bowl and the grill are food safe. The same kadai is made in a medium size.

Frequently Asked

Does the stand and the grill come with it?

Yes. The bowl, the iron stand and the grill all come together.

Can I cook on it?

Yes. It burns wood or charcoal and the grill sits over the bowl. Both bowl and grill are food safe.

Can it be used indoors?

No. The instructions say outdoor use only, never in an enclosed space or under an overhead structure, and they ask for certified firelighters rather than spirit or petrol.

Is there a larger one?

Yes. The same kadai is made in a medium size.

Does it get hot?

Very. Do not touch it without heatproof gloves, let it cool fully before moving it, and keep children and pets away.

How do I look after it?

Take a wire brush and hot soapy water to the grill after use, dry it and rub a cooking oil over it before it goes away dry. Empty standing rainwater out of the bowl so it does not rust through, and take a wire brush to the bowl when it needs it. Keep it under cover through the winter months.
