Description

A lantern 33.5cm tall on a 20cm square base, built as a black iron frame holding four clear glass panels. The base is a flat metal tray with a raised lip that the glass sits inside. An open square chimney rises from the middle of the top plate, and a rounded wire handle arches over it from either side of that chimney. One of the glass panels is a door, held shut by a small wire catch at the middle of its edge.

At 33.5cm the glass stands tall enough to take a church candle with the flame well below the open top, and the four clear panels leave the flame visible from every side. The base tray catches wax rather than letting it run on to the table. The three sizes stand together at different heights.

The frame is iron and the panels are glass. The metal is soldered round the glass with traditional tools, so there are weld marks at every join, left as they come rather than filed back. Candles are not included. Sia also makes this lantern in a medium and a large, and a smaller table lantern in two sizes.

Frequently Asked

How big is it?

33.5cm tall on a 20cm square base.

How does the candle go in?

One of the glass panels is a door, held shut by a small wire catch.

What candle does it take?

A church candle or a tealight.

What are the marks on the joins?

Weld marks. The metal is soldered round the glass by hand and the joins are left showing.

Is it made in other sizes?

Yes. Sia makes this lantern in a medium and a large.

How do I look after it?

Wipe it regularly with a soft, dry cloth, and use a microfibre cloth in a circular motion on the glass. Remove excess wax with warm water and a mild dish soap, drying it at once and never leaving it to soak. Indoor use only. Stand the candle securely and keep the flame away from the glass. It gets hot in use, so keep it out of reach of children, wait until it has cooled fully before handling it, and never leave a burning candle unattended.
