Description

The Shanaya is a chandelier of three tiers, each a ring of narrow vertical glass panels held in an antique bronze frame, the rings stepping inward as they descend so the three sit one inside the next. The glass is mottled: a mercury finish left to break up, so every panel carries its own pattern of dark blotches and bright patches and no two read the same. A dark link chain and a matching flex run up from the top. The fitting is 50cm across, and with the chain at full length it hangs 201.5cm from the ceiling.

Unlit the panels are the point, a band of broken silver and bronze at whatever height the chain sets. Lit, the light comes out between the panels and through the thin places in the mercury, so the piece shimmers rather than glowing evenly, and the dark frame stays dark. At 201.5cm this is built for a stairwell or a double height hall where that drop is the whole idea; a dining room or a living room needs the ceiling height to take it. It takes an E27 bulb up to 60W, it is dimmable, and it is rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms.

The panels are glass and the frame is brass finished in antique bronze. The mercury is applied by hand and left uneven, which is what gives each panel its pattern. At 7.94kg it is a heavy fitting and the ceiling has to carry it. Bulbs are not included.

Frequently Asked

How far does it hang down?

201.5cm from the ceiling with the chain at full length. That is a drop for a stairwell or a tall hall, not for a standard ceiling.

Why does the glass look patchy?

It is a mercury finish, applied by hand and left uneven. Every panel breaks up differently, which is what gives the piece its surface.

How heavy is it?

7.94kg. Three tiers of glass in a brass frame, so the ceiling fixing has to be a proper one.

How do I clean it?

Switch it off and let the bulb cool, then wipe the panels with a soft dry cloth. Keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners off the glass.
