A wall art, 80cm tall, in black. At 60cm wide it is a little narrower than a standard interior door. A piece like this sets the register of a room. Everything else can be quiet if one wall is not.

A dark finish reads as a shape rather than a surface, so the outline does the work and the detail recedes. Against a pale wall that is graphic; against a dark one the piece almost disappears. It arrives as a set, which is worth knowing before you plan where it goes: a group needs a run of surface or floor rather than the single spot a lone piece would take. The body is MDF beneath the finish, which is what holds a panel this size flat. Solid timber of the same width would move with the humidity of the room and eventually show it at a joint.

It hangs on a sawtooth hook. A sawtooth plate lets you nudge the piece left or right after it is hung, which is the one fixing that forgives a slightly misplaced nail. It is only rated for light pieces, and this is one. Supplied as a set of 2.

Nothing about it is delicate. The finish takes a wipe, the form has no crevice that collects dust, and there is no fabric to mark — which is the practical case for this kind of piece over a softer one in a room that gets used.

Check the fixing before the frame: weight decides whether a picture hook will do or the wall needs a plug, and plasterboard needs an anchor whatever the weight.
