Scalinata takes its name from the staircase, and the arrangement explains why. Eighteen cube shades of natural Spanish alabaster hang as a compact cluster that turns as it steps down, each on its own fine cable from a round brass canopy, so the group descends through the space instead of sitting level. Every shade is a true cube with crisp vertical corners, and the two faces visible at any one angle take the light differently, which is what gives the cluster its depth.

The canopy is 400mm across and each alabaster cube is 120mm. That figure is the fixing footprint on the ceiling, not the size of the fitting, which spreads and drops well beyond it once the cables are set. Eighteen shades on a round canopy gives a tall turning column rather than the broad diagonal of the square version, so it drops neatly into a stairwell where the fixing point is narrow but the fall is long. Cable lengths are decided at installation, and each cube carries a small brass cap where its cable meets the stone.

Each cube is cut from natural Spanish alabaster and the veining runs differently through every one, so no two shades in the cluster match. The canopy and the small caps at the top of each cable are brass. Lamping is G9 and bulbs are supplied separately, which lets you choose the output and colour temperature that suit the room. Rated IP20 for interior use. The round canopy also runs to seven, nine and twelve shades, and the square canopies fall as a wider diagonal cascade in eighteen, twenty five and thirty six.

What shape are the shades?

They are cubes. At a glance the cluster can read as a row of cylinders, but each shade has square faces and crisp vertical corners, and the two faces you see from any position catch the light at different strengths.

The lamping is G9 and bulbs are supplied separately, so you can choose the wattage and colour temperature that suit the room.

How does it differ from the eighteen light cascade?

Both carry eighteen shades. This one hangs from a 400mm round canopy and falls as a tall turning cluster; the cascade version hangs from a larger square plate and spreads as a broad diagonal.

Is 400mm the size of the fitting?

No. That is the round brass canopy, which is the fixing footprint on the ceiling. The eighteen shades spread and drop well beyond it once the cable lengths are set.

Does every shade look the same?

No. The alabaster is natural Spanish stone, so veining and translucency vary from cube to cube across the whole cluster.
