Description

This earthenware salt and pepper set turns two everyday pots into little postboxes for Santa, finished in bright red and white with a snowy cap on each. Both pots take the shape of a traditional pillar postbox, with a ribbed band beneath the top, a black posting slot and a black base. A drift of white snow covers each rounded top and drips over the edge, and the small shaker holes sit in that snowy cap. One pot wears a green bow beneath its slot and reads SANTA MAIL in white lettering around the lower body, while the other has a pair of green leaves and reads MAIL BOX. Each pot stands 7.8cm tall and 5cm across.

We think they look happiest on a festive dining table, set between the plates where they bring a little humour to a seasonal meal. They suit a kitchen worktop or a breakfast table just as well, and at 7.8cm tall they tuck neatly onto a shelf or windowsill when the meal is over. As a matching pair they stand happily side by side, the bow and the leaves facing out. They also make a cheerful small gift that is easy to wrap.

Both pots are made from earthenware, a type of ceramic, with a glossy glaze that brings out the bright red and keeps the white snow crisp. The bow, the leaves, the slot and the ribbed band stand slightly proud of the surface. As general good practice for glazed earthenware, wipe each pot with a soft damp cloth and dry it thoroughly, and keep the seasonings dry so the holes stay clear. For a finished look, set the pair on a small dish or a folded red napkin at the centre of the table, and wrap each pot in tissue when you put them away until next winter.
